Building The Ultimate Get Home Bag – Get Home Bag Contents You Must Have

Why you need a get home bag - commuting on the 405Do you need a get home bag? As preppers, we often think of preparing for bugging out. Luckily, there are a lot of resources out there on building a bug-out bag for when SHTF. You might think, “I’ve got my bug-out bag, I’m covered.” The only problem is that a well stocked bug-out bag is probably impractical to use as your get home bag since it is intended to get you through a longer time frame in a survival situation.

Just like the name implies, a Get Home Bag (GHB) is meant to see you through on your trip back home, most likely from work.  Because of this, it needs to be light and inconspicuous enough to blend in whether you’re driving a Hummer or sharing a bus seat. According to the Census Bureau, the average American spends 25 minutes per day commuting to work. That’s about one year of your life over the course of your career. Additionally, the average American spends 90,000 hours at work or another 10 years. Seems like a decent enough chunk of your life to be prepared for, doesn’t it?

Like many things in prepping, knowing where to start can be daunting. Luckily, TheUrbanPrepper has you covered. If you haven’t subscribed to his Youtube channel yet, it’s worth your time. In a very thorough two-part video series, The Urban Prepper walks you through his gear, including all of his get home bag contents. What I really like about his pack is how well organized it is and how well he economizes the available space.
